Human Life
God tells Jeremiah in 1:4-5, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated
you.” This statement to Jeremiah tells us three things about the way God creates a human being. First, He says that
He created our soul before we were in our mother’s womb by stating that He knew us before He formed us. So before
we even had a body our soul existed. Secondly, God made our body and mind exactly how He wanted them to be,
because He told Jeremiah that He formed us in our mother’s womb. Even if we are blind, deaf, dumb, crippled, or
mute; He created us perfectly because this is how God wanted us to look, sound, or act. Finally, God tells Jeremiah
that before we were born He consecrated us, thus He made us sacred in the womb. From the beginning of our life,
God created us holy. We should never think of His gift of life as not sacred and take it for granted. Therefore, we
should always respect human life in its entirety because God made it, He made it holy, and God is good.
As Jeremiah told us, before we were born, we were already a creation of God and bound for holiness. Therefore, a
baby in the womb is a human life with value, and cannot be killed for any reason. Regardless if it is for convenience,
poverty, or the baby is “imperfectly” formed. God chose to create us in the womb the way He wanted us to be on
earth, each with our own purpose. Therefore, if we can tell that a baby is physically or mentally handicapped before it
is born does not mean we can kill or abort it. That baby is a human being, body and soul, created holy by God’s very
own mind and hands. We cannot deny it God’s great gift of life.
Life after birth is just as important to protect as life in the womb. Because of this, we must help others become aware
of God’s words to Jeremiah that all humans, body and soul, are all created holy by God. Without this knowledge,
people cannot develop the right prospective on life. They are not aware that God knows them and loves them, and
cannot feel His love for them. They do not regard human life as sacred because they do not know it came from God.
These people can become very dangerous and sinful, but we must pray for them. We may know that God is the one
that creates all life on earth. We may know that we do not decide when to take our self or anybody else from this
world. However, some people who are angry, frustrated, or depressed, may not know this. They may have been
brought up without love during their childhood, and do not understand God’s love. They may choose to hurt
themselves or others. Maybe they have even hurt or killed someone we knew, were related to, or loved. But we
should not want to hurt or hate them, because we know that all life has been consecrated by God and is holy. We
should pray for them and show them God’s love. We should share with them the message of God’s words to
Jeremiah. Through this understanding of God’s gift of life and love for us all, they may hear their own call of holiness,
confess their sins, and by the grace of God, make it to heaven.
God’s gift of life continues to be important to protect all the way through natural death. God told Jeremiah, that before
we were born, He consecrated us. No matter what, our bodies and souls are holy. So, our lives continue to be holy in
any state of life that God wills for us. If someone has a problem with their mind or body beginning at birth, by accident,
through aging, or illness and is near death, their life is still holy and has value. They deserve the same rights or
respect as a person with a normally functioning body, and must be given the basic needs to live. We cannot deny any
person proper medication or food. If we do, then we have decided that their life no longer has value by taking away
their basic needs to live, and have sentenced them to die. We must also continue to pray for, visit, and encourage
them. If someone does die and we did the best we could for them, by taking care of and praying for them, then we
know that God chose to take them from this world and on to eternal life.
We can simply see what God meant when he spoke to Jeremiah. God told him that He created us, soul and body,
and that He made us holy. Because of this, we know that our lives are holy and we must protect all human life from
the day it is conceived in the womb to the day it leaves this world. We also must help others understand the
significance of life and why we must protect it. Through doing this, we become closer to God and
heaven.
